The history of alternative medicine is long, rich, and rooted in ancient civilizations. It’s believed that the roots of alternative medicine go back as much as 5000 years ago, though it is hard to completely pinpoint its origins. One of the oldest forms of alternative medicine can be linked to Chinese history.

The ancient Chinese based their healing on the importance of the body and the spirit being balanced. This philosophy is rooted in Taoist and Buddhist principals, as well as the principles of Yin and Yang which are vital to the practice (The Complete Herbal Guide, 2020).

These principles contribute to the idea that balance is restored in various ways including herbal medicine, acupuncture, breathing, and movement (Tai Chi and Qigong) and also through diet. Indian culture also contributes to the history of alternative medicine via Ayurvedic medicine dating back as far as 6000 years ago with links to Buddhism. It is a system of medicine that keeps a person’s body, mind, and spirit in tune with nature in order to maintain good health (The Complete Herbal Guide, 2020).

There are also roots of alternative medicine linked to the Romans and Greeks which goes back around 3000 years. Treatments such as hydrotherapy and the use of medicinal plants were practiced and the knowledge was passed down in many works of text. Folk healers also passed on their knowledge via word of mouth (The Complete Herbal Guide, 2020).

In the 19th century, Native Americans in America and Aborigines in Australia were noted to have possessed extensive knowledge of indigenous herbs within their respective environments. This understanding of herbs helped them use herbs within the diet as herbal remedies to treat specific ailments and conditions (The Complete Herbal Guide, 2020).

While the 20th century saw a widescale shift towards modern medicine, a large population of people still pursued alternative medicine therapies, and alternative medicines still continued to grow in popularity.

This long and rich history is one of the many reasons so many people trust alternative medicine therapies. The use amongst diverse peoples also speaks to its ability to work effectively across more traditional boundaries or barriers.
